There are some movies that should never be remade.
Since the first time I watched it, Field of Dreams was in that category for me. I must have watched it at least forty times. At one point in time I actually had memorized the entire movie and could recite it word for word.
Over the last few years though, I have come to a sad realization. People don't care about Field of Dreams anymore.
A generation of people have never watched the show even though it should still have a home on cable movie stations like AMC and the Superstation. Unfortunately you are more likely to see a Charles Bronson movie than an all time classic sports movie.
You can go ahead and give me Point Break and True Lies all the time, but at least splice in a showing of Field of Dreams every once in awhile. Heck, Little Big League and Rookie of the Year gets as much air time as FOD.
I can't even begin to tell you how wrong it is for that to happen.
For the sake of a new generation who has not grown up with good baseball movies and who know Kevin Costner better as Mr. Brooks than Ray Kinsella, FOD needs to be remade.
With that in mind ...
Ray Kinsella - Josh Hartnett
For one thing, the age range matches up perfectly. Maybe it's just me, but I think Hartnett can play the kind of character who seems tortured by his relationship with his deceased father. I actually think he might be able to throw a baseaball properly, which is obviously a prerequisite for the role. When I thought of another Ray Kinsella, Hartnett immediately came to mind.
Annie Kinsella - Ginnifer Goodwin
It was a toss up between her and Melissa George. George was my first choice, but she was already in 30 Days of Night with Hartnett and it just seems like a weird transition. Goodwin is super underrated (a member of the Surprisingly Hot list) and already has experience playing a wife and mother on Big Love.
Karin Kinsella - Elle Fanning
I'm digging deep to find a child actress. I only could name you two of them, Dakota Fanning and Abigail Breslin. I looked them up on IMDB and they both are getting a little too old to play the daughter in this movie. Fortunately, I found out that Dakota has a sister so she gets the role by default and pure nepotism.
Terrance Mann - Delroy Lindo
No one could ever match the voice of James Earl Jones. Delroy Lindo is the kind of respected black actor who knows how to give a damn good speech though. If anyone else can pull off the "People will come, Ray" speech, it's Lindo.
"Shoeless" Joe Jackson - Ryan Gosling
"Shoeless" Joe just can't be another actor. It needs to be someone with the acting chops to pull it off. Gosling has come a long way since Breaker High and I think he would do Ray Liotta proud with his take on the role.
Mark (Maggie's brother in law) - Gary Cole
Why Cole? Because when you have the chance to have Bill Lumbergh in your film, you jump at the opportunity.
Archibald "Doc" Graham - Robert Redford
Redford would probably be a tough pull, but you need someone who can live up to the ghost of Burt Lancaster and Redford could definitely do that. Who wouldn't want to see Roy Hobbs in another baseball movie?
Archie "Moonlight" Graham - Joseph-Gordon Levitt
In retrospect, they might have been better suited historically to have someone else other than the guy who was in Career Opportunities play the younger version of Graham. So hopefully this selection makes up for it. I know that he's actually a lot older than the teenager he would be playing, but have you seen the guy's face? He probably gets carded buying lottery tickets, yet somehow he is Cobra Commander in the new G.I. Joe. I think he is a lot more suited for this kind of role.
